Brighton rocks and where should you eat? The Lion and the lobster of course!

So after 10 years for going to Brighton on a regular basis we have only just this past weekend found the best place for food! The Lion and lobster is amazing - great food, beautiful surroundings, excellent service and good prices oh and a lovely well thought different menu too!

All in all our new fav and only place to go in brighton. Must not be missed!

the 'specials' menu thought this would give you an idea of what to expect. They do also offer burger and chips fish and chips that kind of stuff.

hahaha the lobster has boobs in this - love it!

beautiful interior make sure you go up stairs to the restaurant

down at the cockle shed in leigh on sea

Last weekend we took a visit to the cockle sheds in leigh on sea (after a night on the town) - the child hood memories came flooding back. As children we used to do little days out and this was one of our spots. It also reminded me of the fish man that used to come round the pubs and working man clubs (what happened to them??) any way i of course ordered some cockles for my sister, rolled mops for dad and mussels for mum. I had sea food cocktail and fish sticks. YUM YUM YUM!!! Love it!

Go veggie go!

Well you may have realised by now that I am a massive meat eater! So when I was invited to check out the rather fabulous tibits on Heddon Street, just off Regent Street, I had some reservations, but they were pleasantly put to bed with my first mouthful.

Now if you haven't been here before, it's a little different to say the least ... you are greeted by a very large buffet style display of yummy, fresh and extremely colourful array of food, both hot and cold.

Pick up a plate and help yourself to a multitude of different veggie dishes. Once you feel you have selected enough, you go to the counter and weigh - yep you read correctly, weigh your food. This is how they work out the cost of your meal. We also, at this point ordered a glass of house white and a cucumber and lime mojito. The wine was very nice, the cocktail however was not so good, but smelt lovely.

So the food.... where to start. We decided we would have two sittings - I am not sure if this is the norm or if it was just us being greedy, its just there was so much to choose from. So we plated up a small plate first and scoffed the lot straight away, swapping and tasting. It was very good and I must say I was very pleased with myself - I liked everything I chose which is a first for me.

Second siting ... Went for the carrot and prune curry with rice, very good indeed - didn't think I would like it as I am not mad on fruit with my savoury food but it was very tasty.

The pud - sticky toffee and cheese cake - both were lovely, I would have preferred the sticky toffee to have been warm but they were delicious all the same.

The overall feel to me is a perfect spot to go with friends. You all pay for your own food and drinks and you can have as much or as little as you like. I will definitely be going back. In fact, I may have to take my friends (one of which is a veggie) next week as I think they will all love it - there really is something for everyone (ok no meat - but I didn't even miss it!)

It is a very social space, complete with a large outdoor area - love it, was very very pleased.

Oh and if you do go, make sure you pick up a copy of their latest recipe book, you can have a  go at making some of their dishes at home.

foraging for Sloes to make our Sloe Gin

So its that time of year where we must venture out in the beautiful Autumn sunshine and forage for some sloes to make our must have hip flask drink - Sloe Gin.

This year we decided to share the love - a jar for us, a jar for my dad and a jar for friends (a homemade house warming gift)

Its very straight forward... pick a bunch of Sloe berries add sugar and gin and your done.

the berries

our harvest - a little over board we latter find out, a whole bowl and half too many

prick the berries with a needle several times - this takes a while i have since read on the world wide web that you can freeze the berries and smash them this would be a lot quicker but some how feels like a cheat to me

once all in the jar shake to mix

the final product - just got to wait 4-8 weeks with a little turning and shaking in between

Duck Soup new kid on the block in soho

amazing - tomato with soggy bread, basil, garlic and chunks of parmesan

perfectly cooked lamb perfectly seasoned very very good but no greens??

glad i didnt order this not my bag. and i latter noticed missing a langoustine also the artichoke was a great touch in theory sadly not in practice best left alone in my opinion

great counter top dining - tiny venue and we saw two men lunching on their own. which is always a good sign

wine list written on white titles quite cool - its all very cool but possibly a bit try hard cool ??

This place only opened its doors two weeks ago is is the brain child of some guys that worked at Hicks.

Good job I say, keep up the good work.

few tiny gripes - looks like they spent minimal money (which I think is the look they are going for) even down to loads of spider plants everywhere and unfinished looking flooring and brick work - it seems to be popping up everywhere at the moment. Any way sorry, my point is its all been done on the cheap but its far from cheap 14 quid for 4 lamb chops! I ask you, really...

We sat at 1 of the 3 tables along the wall - note to all, DONT. My friend thinks they should have an actual note posted on arrival 'fatties be advised the tables are NOT made for you, we suggest you sit at the bar'.
Needless to say they are rather snug and not ideal if you are not of a slender frame

They seem to have a daily menu which I think is fab! hand written and kept on a meat hook??? make of that what you will.
